Chronology

The following is a chronology of my relevant medical condition to the best of my recollection.

January 1998 – Diagnosed with Type II Diabetes; received treatment from a variety of endocrinologist, but for the most extended length of time from the medical office of Dr. Dale Hamilton.

January 2010 – Experienced an extremely minor TIA (slurred words for approximately 2 minutes), went to Methodist Hospital to be examined for the TIA and was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Creatinine levels normal.

October 2010 – Began vomiting constantly (8x in 24 hours), admitted to hospital, first notice of increased creatinine levels and protein in urine, diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease.

October 2010 – August, 2014 – Under the care of nephrologist, Dr. Michael Campbell for kidney disease and high blood pressure; numerous doctor visits and additional hospitalizations for a variety of reasons; Dr. Campbell essentially acted as my go-to physician.

May 2012 – Hospitalized for poor kidney function; first diagnosed with ITP.

June 2012 – July 2012 – Received a call from Dr. Campbell on a Thursday before a planned three-week trip to Europe beginning on Monday; Dr. Campbell said my most recent blood tests revealed a platelet count of 8000; spent the next two weeks in hospital; surgeries for neck catheter and fistula; began dialysis. We were able to recover the last 10 days of trip to Europe for a visit to Paris, France. I had promised this trip to my daughter since we read stories of Madeline, and there was nothing that was going to keep me from taking her to Paris even if it killed me. Also, I received dialysis in France; learned French dialysis centers are awesome, but traveling with kidney failure extremely hard, at best, because you are tired and it takes a lot of time away from your family on the trip.

July 2012 – August 2014 – Received home hemodialysis three times a week for five hours each session from start to finish; finished with 15 gauge blunt needle.

Fall 2013- Began testing donors for kidney transplant.

June 2014- Received the news that my sister, Marcy, is a match and began scheduling the kidney transplant.

January 2014- Hospitalized for RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) for six days.

August 19, 2014- Scheduled to receive kidney donation from my sister, Marcy!

  1. I have a son who is obviously smarter than I am. Over his life he has been a source of great joy and a few frustrations. I am very proud of the manner in which he has faced his kidey failure and ITP. He has been a big inspiration to me and continues to amaze me with the good decisions he makes–studying law, marrying Shari, Ole Miss…
I am anxious to see how God will use this current situation in his life. Joe B
